Scoundrel

A Rogue-like Card Game by Zach Gage and Kurt Bieg.

Design and videogame by Tankrat9

What's Scoundrel?

Scoundrel is a single player game created in 2011 by Zach Gage and Kurt Bieg. The rules are very simple and everyone can play it because all you need is just a standard deck of cards.

Why create a videogame about Scoundrel?

I ran into this game with a friend and I instantly fell in love with it. It's accessible, it's immediate and most importantly it's fun!

After playing for a while I decided to test my Unreal Engine's skills by making a digital version of it. This would have remove the most annoying part of the game: shuffle the deck every time. So I could have played more games ;).

Why redesign it?

Scoundrel is meant to be played with a standard deck of cards. In my opinion this is a strenght of the game, but makes it a little anonymous. While I was developing it I thought that it would be a shame to use the standard card design. So I decided to create a unique (and most importantly, minimal due to my skills xD) design of every card to make it more catchy ;).

I'm not a designer but please let me know what do you think about the result.

Difficulty of the game

Scoundrel is very easy to set up but definitely NOT to play. Every time I checked the rules (http://stfj.net/art/2011/Scoundrel.pdf) the game became harder and harder to play. In the end I decided to code a slightly easier version (see more at the 2nd page of in game rules). This way the game is not too punishing and are also reduced some unwinnable scenarios. Maybe when I'm a stronger player, I'll update the to the actual version of the game xD.

Help me improve

I would appreciate feedbacks from you about the game. Feel free to write a comment down below. Hope to see you soon, bye!
